Robert Hester Fishing Tournament

Bob Hester, a Memphis Police Department patrolman, was an avid fisherman who often participated in fishing tournaments organized by fellow Memphis police officers. On January 12, 1983, officers were saddened by his tragic line-of-duty death.

Shortly after Hester’s death, MPA member Mike Fuller, a participant and frequent organizer of area fishing tournaments, suggested that that the MPA begin sponsoring a fishing tournament in Hester’s honor. Ray Maples and Ken Rooker, president and vice president of the MPA at the time, championed the idea. The first Bob Hester Memorial Fishing Tournament took place at Lakeview May 26, 1983.

The tournament is held every spring. MPA members and friends gather at the event and pay tribute to Hester and other fallen officers. The entry fee for the tournament is $35 per boat with a limit of two people per boat.
